Welcome back to The Comet's Tale ☄️!

Greetings again, Comet Explorers! Chris here. 👋🏼

With The Comet’s Tale ☄️ now “comet’ing” at you daily, I’mma stay on top of EVERYTHING (well except Sundays, we all need a break sometimes!) for y’all… because why not continue riding Perplexity’s tailwinds of innovation itself, together as a community?

Workflow Wizardry Week, Part I

In celebration of my one-year AI-nniversary (because who doesn’t love 🧀 puns?), I’m kicking off Workflow Wizardry Week for all you Perplexity and Comet Assistant lovers.

But first, a brief reminder for the newcomers to the fold…

In case you missed it: What actually IS Perplexity Comet? ☄️

Simply put… Comet accomplishes the following:

  • Instantly reads and digests web pages for you

  • Cross-examines facts from multiple sources

  • Delivers real-time, trustworthy fact-checks

  • Shops smarter, finding deals as you browse

  • Drafts emails, docs, and summaries with context

  • Answers questions about anything you see—right on the page

Let The 🧙🏼‍♂️ Begin!

To kick-off Workflow Wizardry Week, I present my Comet browser, exactly as I see it! This was created during the beta-testing of Perplexity’s Comet browser, and truth be told? It’s how I start EVERY morning while I go to make coffee.

My landing page.

This is what I see when I fire up Comet every morning; I love the widgets feature and hope they put some sort of background theming on the New Tab page, but I understand that could slow the browser down. After getting my bearings?

Behold! The Perplexity Space I call home. 🏡

Now, what’s very important about Perplexity Spaces is how you instruct them.

Let me tell y’all a harsh truth really quick (and I’m talking to myself as much as anyone else)… you are NOT a naturally good prompt engineer. I have a bit of a spiel about this…

Prompt engineering is NOT what you see on LinkedIn for people who are touting their “services” about how “to talk to AI”. Prompt engineering is a hard science that requires knowledge as to the mathematical computations of semanticization against any SLM/LLM’s training set to measure convergence/divergence from its programmed mean.

Chris Dukes

This is important to note because I see a LOT of folks fall for a lot of “CLICK HERE AND PAY THROUGH THIS PAYWALL and I’ll teach you WHAT CHATGPT DOESN’T!”

It’s a bunch of hooey. If you didn’t understand that blockquote, plug it into Perplexity and ask about it. Even as someone relatively seasoned (or at least, spiced) in generative AI, I DO NOT DO MY OWN PROMPTING (at least most of the time for real queries). What do I use instead?

My custom Prompt Engineering Gem from Gemini Advanced

A Prompt Engineering Gem. I could’ve used this as a Perplexity Space if I wanted, but even though this is a Perplexity newsletter, a) Gemini 2.5 Pro is available through Perplexity and b) you can transition the same thing into a Perplexity Space.

So with that out of the way, what can this Comet Assistant Space do?

First, let’s take note of the screenshot of the Space. You will it says “searching with custom instructions and 2 sources.” Here is a teaser of what that looks like…

If you don’t already know, have Perplexity find you “the October 2024 Google whitepaper”. It’ll know what you’re talking about.

Let’s take an example of non-formatted prompt (this is any prompt I have not fed through my Prompt Engineering Gem), and let’s see how powerful this makes Perplexity’s Comet next to your average “find this out” query on ChatGPT. I’m not using Perplexity Deep Research or Perplexity Labs… I’m using its base search on a Perplexity Pro membership (Perplexity calls this model Sonar, finetuned from Llama3.3-70b; not important if you don’t know what this is, but if you’re curious, Comet-ify it!)

The prompt in the Space? Utilizing The Comet Assistant to take over the browser whenever necessary, run a cross-referencing and contextually relevant search across any domains or knowledge bases to find the most viral topics people are searching on how to make money quickly.

The results?? As they say in Jurassic Park, hold on to your butts…

If you are not getting 50+ sources per BASIC Sonar pull, your prompt needs work!

SOMEONE on LinkedIn would’ve charged you $1000 for those results (and it’s working). Simply because they feel as if they’re natural-born communicators. Guess what? We ain’t talking to humans, here. AI does not naturally intuit, be instinctual, handle nuance or sarcasm, or understand idioms.

💨 Comet’s Tailwinds 💫

Your daily dump of fun Comet Tailwinds to try out:

I. Perplexity Search (Sonar)

Prompt:
List three far-fetched or “sci-fi adjacent” trends emerging in my niche from the past two weeks—then, for each, write a speculative “what if this goes mainstream?” scenario in 3 sentences. Include a plausible headline from the near future, facts (real), and one actionable experiment I could run this week inspired by each scenario.

Why use it?
Pushes you and your team to spot possibilities before they hit the hype cycle, sparking breakthrough product ideas or “first-to-market” experiments while grounding the brainstorming in reality.

Tip:
Use the future headlines as icebreakers in team chats, pitch decks, or to jumpstart your monthly innovation meeting.

II. Perplexity Deep Research

Prompt:
Conduct an advanced “source triangulation” for my topic of the week: Find 4 expert perspectives with contrasting viewpoints, and present their main arguments in a debate-style back-and-forth (“Pro,” “Con,” “Wildcard,” “Skeptic”). For each, cite both the linked source and a quick credibility/risk note (are they hype-prone? Academic? Contrarian?).

Why use it?
Arm yourself for high-level discussions and content creation—this prompt dramatically elevates research depth while helping you preempt common objections with real-world ammunition.

Tip:
Plug results straight into social posts, newsletters, or internal memos—demonstrates critical thinking and positions you as a “sensemaker” in your niche.

**Special shout-out: “source triangulation” is something VERY relevant to generative AI and machine learning, ask Perplexity why!

III. Perplexity Labs

Prompt:
Take my latest set of calendar events, emails, and work notes—map them into a single “personal KPI dashboard” proposal: What 3 metrics could an AI agent track daily that would maximize my output or learning? Output as an actionable dashboard sketch (columns: Metric | Reason it matters | Sample AI automation), and include a Zapier or API-ready workflow outline for instant implementation.

Why use it?
Transforms scattered digital exhaust into executive-level insight and instant automations, moving you from information overload to “always-on optimization.”

Tip:
Send this output to your developer or automation lead—or use as a self-coaching system for quarterly reviews!

🛸 Comet’s Cosmic Curios

Here’s what’s pinging The Comet’s Tale ☄️ radar as far as … well, let’s call them curious … uses of AI.

“Hug My Younger Self” Trend:

A new Instagram AI craze is melting hearts—and triggering giggles—everywhere: thousands are using AI to generate a photo where their present self hugs their digitally re-created child self. What started with sweet reunions is now pure chaos: people are hugging teenage goth versions of themselves, 1970s disco clones, or—if you’re unlucky—an accidental uncanny-valley “baby boss” who looks like the world’s youngest tax attorney.

  • How it works: Upload a current selfie, pick a “decade/style,” and AI morphs you and your pint-sized doppelgänger into a scene—sometimes heartwarming, sometimes “Twilight Zone.”

  • The viral twist: Social feeds are now loaded with mashups like “Me hugging my 2004 emo self (and his wonky eyeliner)” and “Who let toddler me wear that suit?” There’s even a trend for “pet cameos,” where the AI invents imaginary childhood pets for extra absurdity.

  • Top meme so far: “I can’t believe my inner child looks like a backup dancer for a 90s boy band...”

Want to join in? Users say it’s the “AI equivalent of hugging your cringe phase”—and, as a bonus, a viral format for team icebreakers or a Friday office challenge.

Let me know if you want a prompt tailored for Perplexity workflows that riffs on this trend!

💬 Cosmic Q&A

Each day, I’ll answer a hand-picked reader’s question.

Today?

Q: Is it true that AI is secretly controlling more of my daily life than I realize…even outside of computers and smartphones? -Amy

A: EXCELLENT question, Amy. To not sugar-coat anything or make any false equivalenices, spins, or promises…

Yes it does. It quietly is running “background missions” almost everywhere you look—and not just on your laptop or in chatbots. Make no mistake, there are real privacy trade-offs and sacrifies that MUST be weighed by every individual, no matter what AI they use** (** does not apply to local, siloed genAI, which will be covered in a future newsletter). But it isn’t all doom and gloom!

For example…Did you know that artificial intelligence:

  • Tweaks the temperature in your smart thermostat and decides when your fridge should lower the lights?

  • Ranks your emails and calendar invites so you “just happen” to see what matters most?

  • Routes delivery trucks, helps choreograph the price of your groceries, and even picks which TV shows get greenlit for next season?

The wildest part? AI is now even influencing everything from how your car suggests new routes (so you avoid traffic jams) to picking which songs get featured in Spotify playlists and predicting when a city’s trash bins will overflow (seriously—San Francisco pioneered this).

Just like data brokers and data services we use everyday even before AI (think Meta, Google, Cambridge Analytica), we all have to make trade-offs and decide where the line is for our own person comfort.
